The men in particular just weren't that interested in the details of our lives. We didn't seem to register on their radar. One time when I was a teen I visited the family of my sister's friend. The dad was so nice and engaging. He asked us questions and seemed sincerely interested in us and ordered pizza for us. At first I thought he was messing with us! I was suspicious. Later when I figured out that he was the real deal and dads like that actually existed, it made me cry.
