18. My first time hearing When Doves Cry. From my Facebook

The single "When Doves Cry" was released on May 16, 1984.

There aren't many songs that I recall vividly the first time I heard them but this is definitely one of them.

I was driving and I remember staring at the radio, amazed at the what I was hearing. First, there is no bass. NO BASS. The entire arrangement is fascinating because it's sparse and open while being intricate and detailed.

The drums. The keyboards. The vocals.

The vocals.

How many different voices was he using? How many layers to create that sound.

That song changed everything.

I join all my friends in our sorrow at the loss of such an artist. Glad to see he is getting the accolades he deserves and I hope he knew how much we all loved him.

Thank god we still have his music.
