But as far as Black people are concerned, President Obama has delivered nothing as far as I see.
President Obama has promised big ("Hope", "Change"
and while he has delivered on some, on many more he has been M.I.A.
(We in the organized labor movement still have his "comfortable shoes" waiting for him)
I've always said that when he was running for office, he promised us nothing and he's delivered on his promise. If it had been a white politician who said those same things, we would be all over his/her back. Which puzzles me on Black America's lack of support for Bernie Sanders, whose service is documented and their support for Hillary Clinton, whose antipathy ALSO is well documented.
To me, President Obama has been the beneficiary of Black militancy and advocacy but has ditched it when it became no longer convenient for him; witness his treatment of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whose fiery sermons were not only factually correct but also biblically sound. It was not enough for then Senator Obama to distance himself from his remarks but to characterize him as a "crazy uncle" was an unnecessary kick. It makes me wonder what would his reaction have been had he faced Dr. King and his "Beyond Vietnam" speech in 1967?
Black Americans have no more time for "respectability politics". Our rights are not being respected; our votes are not being respected and our lives are not being respected. He of ALL PEOPLE should know that more than anyone else with his dealings with Congress. The late Bartcop became frustrated with him trying to "negotiate with rabid dogs", but yet he seems to save lectures and platitudes for us; the ones who gave 97% of our vote to.
But we can't say we weren't warned: http://www.blackagendareport.com/content/why-barack-obama-more-effective-evil
President Obama's future is secure; his children's futures are secure. But I wonder how secure is the future of the all of those whose situation was like Obama's as a youth or those now who are at risk? How well will they fare? Something to ponder for the future even as the plans for the future Obama Presidential Library are being drawn. I hope they have a display of a Black child with an empty box to signify the promises made but never kept.
