(4,033 posts)I don't know what it is like now, but back in the 60's and 70's, the Post Office would hire temps for the Christmas rush. I know, because for several years I looked forward to getting hired on at the Post Office at Christmas, because they paid so well. We would be hired as sorters (back in the days before the automatic sorters), truck loaders/unloaders, and other stuff.
And in the 90's I worked as a contract programmer for the Post Office as well. We were not Postal employees (don't I wish), but worked for a Gov't Contractor. It was interesting, because while I was there, Contractor A lost the bid to Contractor B. We stayed put, just our paychecks then came from Contractor B instead of Contractor A. Not a single person lost their job in the 'move'.
