TALLAHASSEE A nonprofit research group is pressing lawmakers and Gov. Rick Scott to "dust off" Florida's antiquated laws for how public officeholders conduct themselves, citing a "corruption crisis" in the state.
Next week, the Florida Commission on Ethics is slated to approve its annual wish-list for reforms to the state's ethics laws, a document that frequently gets ignored in the halls of the Capitol.
Integrity Florida, a start-up research group in Tallahassee, wants to focus attention on the issue ahead of the June 15 commission meeting. On Wednesday, it released a report that cited federal statistics to make the claim that Florida "faces a corruption crisis that threatens the state's reputation, its economy and its ability to attract new jobs and capital."
And its director said he'd met with Scott's office and was confident that ethics reform would have more traction in the 2013 legislative session.
