Because a black family lives there. In this special way she's been on the front lines of this civil rights era for most of her life now. At least she's not out in the "normal" world, where the same vicious anger and resentment are taken out on many, many thousands of usually surprised and helpless bushwhacked black people, not all of whom survive.
