(24,692 posts)FDR's "Four Freedoms" speech emphasized that the freedoms were for "everywhere in the world".
Harry Hopkins (FDR adviser and an architect of the New Deal) interrupted FDR while he was dictating the speech and told FDR that he should not say "everywhere in the world" because Americans are not going to give a damn about people in Java".
FDR replied, "Well Harry. They are going to have to give a damn about people in Java from now on."
Well Mr. President, conservatives, and certainly the Donald, have never given a damn about 'people in Java'. Nowadays many liberals have pretty much joined them.
Mr. President, Mr. Hopkins was right.
A lot has changed since 1945. Much of what FDR promoted has been cast aside. This is just one more thing.
Some Democrats still like the idea but this poll was in 2014 and things have changed since then.

republicans in congress had been pushing to delay a vote until after the election since it is obvious from Trump's success that their base does not like TPP or any other international agreement for that matter. Obama had been pushing for an early vote perhaps mistakenly thinking that Democratic support for it in polls would help.
That ain't going to happen.
