(47,675 posts)It was early in my awareness of politics and what Anderson was saying just made more sense than anything Carter and Reagan were saying. If I could do it again (and was of age), I would have campaigned and voted for Carter. I watched the debates closely and was blown away by Reagan's blatant lies. I expected the paper's front page headline to be "REAGAN LIED HIS FUCKING ASS OFF LAST NIGHT", but all I found was a sentence in the last paragraph of an article on A-10 that said something to the effect of "former governor Reagan made a minor misstatement during the debate". The whole "there you go again" thing is what swayed undecided voters. Carter failed to call him out on it.
In the '84 election, there was that moment where Reagan went off about driving down the coast with Nancy looking out over the ocean and the moderator had to interrupt him repeatedly with "Mr. President" before he finally snapped out of his Alzheimer's moment and realized he was on stage. I'm not being disrespectful to those with Alzheimer's (and have lost elders to it), but if there was any doubt in anyone's mind that he was mentally toast before that, the debate should have removed said doubt.
