much more urban and less rural than you would think.
In 1940 the majority of Texans55 percentlived in rural areas, in keeping with the long-held stereotype of our state. But a mere ten years later, the number had already dropped to about 37 percent, while 44 percent lived in metropolitan areas. Today the vast majority of Texans88 percent!live in metropolitan areas. That number isnt likely to change much by 2050.

The problem is where you draw the line between 'rural' and 'urban'. Suburban and exurban Texans vote as red as their rural counterparts, and there's no good quantifiable measurement of those people that I can find. But it's safe to say that they're included in the 'urban' tally, especially since the Census data has redefined Galveston -- population about 40K -- as an urban cluster of Houston.
