But judging their veracity on the basis of what I want to believe on the basis of a third hand account of what someone says they were told about what someone else said, is frequently unproductive.

In the course of dealing with disputes every danged day of my life, I frequently find that two people can read the same thing, and come away with completely different impressions of what it means.

The headline of this thread is "Why isn't Trey Gowdy being prosecuted for fraud". Perhaps the answer to that question lies on the lack of anything thus far which is an admission by Trey Gowdy of faking the emails. Not what someone says he said, but what he actually did say.
