There's a revealing feature article in the June Atlantic on Trump's psychological constitution.

There is a passage about narcissists:
As long as they prove to be successful and brilliant...they may be able to weather criticism and retain their exalted status. But more often than not, narcissists wear out their welcome. Over time, people become annoyed, if not infuriated, by their self-centeredness. When narcissists begin to disappoint those whom they once dazzled, their descent can be especially precipitous. There is still truth today in the ancient proverb: Pride goeth before the fall.
Trump has apparently won the GOP nomination, but he's made some very serious (and numerous) enemies in the process. They will not soon forget how he mocked them and then shoved them off the primary train.
Trump's climb is getting steeper. And there are panthers in the trees.

It's possible. The GOP will be more eager to take him out than the Dems and they are ruthless.

The Rethug elites will run a third party candidate against him if he doesn't step aside.
