How is an AR-15 a "high powered weapon", it is a weak small caliber, too weak for serious hunting.

.223 is a varmint round. It came from the commercial .222 Remington. The 5.56 is the NATO version

Actually, the 5.56/.223 is used on varmints and feral hogs daily. Very, very few human victims.
