He was removed from that position by Pope Francis in 2014. The Pope diplomatic refrains from saying it was because of Burke's outspoken disagreements with the direction Francis is taking the Church. In any case Burke holds a ceremonial role that has no power, Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. He may be in danger of losing even that with his rabid mouth.

This demotion was said to be related to his criticism of the Pope's leadership and proposals for reform. I see this story was October 2014. That was before he got fired. Maybe this was the final straw. Why post an old story without clarification?
