But I think you're exactly on point there: futzing around with anything less than a full ban of semi-autos with detachable magazines is frankly window-dressing.

We even have a great legal instrument for doing this, the 1934 National Firearms Act, under which firearms are scheduled according to fitness for civilian use. It's actually administratively a fairly small matter to move semi-autos (either all of them, or just those that accept detachable magazines) from where they are to the same schedule as automatics. (Politically, of course, is a different story...)

And, yes: anything we do must include handguns. Frankly if I faced a choice I'd go after them before I went after rifles.
