which is on the east coast of Florida.

I have to assume that there are nightclubs that serve mostly LGBT folks much closer to where he lived. And terrorist aren't usually concerned about shielding their near and dear ones from trouble, by not acting near where they live. So it seems like he had some reason to go to this particular place.
