Forty Senators Have Thus Far Joined Senator Murphey's Filibuster. [View all]
A filibuster launched by a senator from Connecticut over gun control in the wake of the Orlando terror attack stretched past midnight Wednesday, more than 13 hours after it began.
"I've had enough. I've had enough of the ongoing slaughter of innocents, and I've had enough of inaction in this body," Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat, said during the filibuster on the Senate floor which he launched at around 11:21 a.m. Wednesday.
Forty senators have joined Murphy, according to C-SPAN2, broadcasting the proceedings.
Murphy opened the floor to other senators for questions but has not yielded the floor. Murphy said he wants Congress to enact tighter restrictions to prevent those with serious criminal histories; those deemed mentally incompetent; and those on terrorism watch lists from obtaining firearms.
