(21,786 posts)Handguns firing cartridge ammunition are banned, except weapons of "historical interest"; semi-automatic rifles are banned, except in .22LR calibre; semi-automatic shotguns are banned. Private individuals can own: single-shot, bolt-action, and lever-action rifles chambered for centrefire ammunition, single- or double-barrelled shotguns, and "shot pistols" (20 gauge or .410) for pest control. A firearms certificate is required for each weapon; to obtain a firearms certificate one must show good reason for having a gun (self-defence is not a reason), which includes: membership in a gun club for target shooting, hunting, game shooting, control of pests and vermin on farms. One must have separate locked storage for firearms and ammunition that conforms to a specific standard.
