4. Indonesia homosexuality fatwa: Ulema Council issues same-sex punishment

IT IS known for its conservative rule and harsh punishment for anyone daring to break its laws.

But Indonesia’s most influential Muslim clerical organisation has gone one further and issued a fatwa calling for same-sex acts to be punished by caning and even the death penalty.

The semi-official Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) which issued the religious edict equates homosexuality with a curable disease with related sexual acts “that must be heavily punished”.

The council also called gay and lesbians deviants who are affront to the “dignity of Indonesia” according to Human Rights Watch which has expressed grave concerns about the fatwa.
