inflames marginal wackos to think they can be an assassin/hero who will save the earth from another WW2, Holocaust etc.

The other question is: who knows what the consequences of assassination are ?

If an ultra-nationalist Germany ends up with a dictator like Reinhard Heydrich instead of Hitler, would the world be safer or even more perilous ?
