a bad fire season. This year is expected to be worse.

All summer I'd see various firefighters on occasion: at a store, or at the hospital where I work the information desk. I was always charmed by they young men -- they're all young, fit, cheerful, friendly, and other good things I'm not thinking of at the moment. Whatever they pay them may well not be enough for how they risk their lives.

While it's a pleasure seeing such wonderful people, I can only hope I don't see any of them this year, but I probably will.

Oh, and I'm sure there are young women who also fight fires, and I don't mean to slight them just because I didn't happen to see them. Any person who does this stuff on my behalf is fantastic.
