except for the fact that they're all dormant volcanoes and part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire
And whenever California gets The Big One, not being part of the union with the rest of the states would not work out so well for getting aid.
Short of Lucifer's Hammer hitting right in the middle of Yosemite, talk of breaking up the states is rather fruitless. We're all in it together, for better or worse.
