9. For the same reason people get religion

It's easier if you can blame some other force in the universe. Easier to just coast along and believe that things are happening because a deity wants them that way, or because Jupiter is aligned with Venus, than to deal with the fact that you've actually gotta get your shit together and make generally good decisions in life.
