A whole line of cops trained in firearm use were no match for a semiauto rifle with a 10 round magazine, which is what the news said he had.

If they truly were "no match" for the shooter, he would still be at large and killing people. They engaged him and cornered him. If they hadn't, the whole robot ploy would not have been possible.

That good guy with a gun only have a chance if the gun is out and pointing at the bad guy when he starts to shoot and that's not going to happen very often.

So why aren't all the cops dead? If what you say is true, he should have been able to kill the entire Dallas PD. After all, he "had the drop on them," right?

It's a sad irony that the police had a very subdued presence there due to the peaceful nature of the protest: they weren't all geared up with body armor, helmets, long guns, etc. This had to have been deliberate, and ordinarily would have been a very wise choice. Unfortunately, the night turned out to be anything but ordinary.
