68. Yeah. I grew up in the middle of deep blue FDR country, middle of the Dust Bowl. Those

folks had FDR's pic on the wall, may or may not have Jesus. They knew damn well who saved them.

Their children, then parents, my neighbors as far as one could see, showed up at the high school they threw me in, back in 1971. They incited their kids to violence, beating and stoning the black kids who had shown up on buses. The kids had to retreat to the DQ across the street and the police and fire rescued them. Went on for a few days, the hate went on up until I took off in the Spring of the next year to join the Navy, and presumably after.

Back then we actively intervened in people's awareness, and there was some measurable progress, but the trend toward individualism of the past 40 years or so has killed that. Such things, and their funding, have fallen out of favor. I guess people think racism and hate will just cure themselves, but left alone most cancers spread. Hate does that too.

It's amazing what we have thrown away, and are throwing away, as human resources. I don't know if we will last that much longer as a nation, but maybe that's not so bad.
