After Russia beat Sweden in a 2008 European cup match, a headline in a Russian paper read:

'Novaia Poltava' ('New Poltava')

Poltava was the site of a 1709 battle between Sweden and the Russian Empire, where the Russians won a big victory. They went on to win the war and this is often cited as a major step in Russia's emergence as a great power and Sweden's decline into secondary power status.
