Trump is a narcissist whose public persona is very important to him. It also makes him predictable and capable of being manipulated in ways known to psychologists but not to me. One thing I do know is that narcissists suffer from occasional depression and crashes of self-esteem. When prosecutors start closing in, he'll fold up like a lawn chair, but only for a comparatively brief moment.

If prosecutors wait until that moment and then give Trump the choice between walking out now and making it appear as if it's his own decision, or staring down the possibility of federal charges once he loses, or half a dozen ways of legally neutralizing him if he wins, he'll take the deal and walk.

If he drops out, it's almost a no-harm-no-foul situation where his departure satisfies the public interest and he may be permitted to continue as he has with more exposure and more money. If he stays in, he'll be mentioned in the same breath as Benedict Arnold for the next hundred years.
