I wonder if the folks who complained were sensible white folks who were offended by the language because it reminded them of a not-too-distant past where that overt racism wasn't all too uncommon.

I wasn't going to write that sentence, until I realized I was making myself uncomfortable worrying that someone would be offended by me stereotyping someone by race. Jeez. Makes me wonder how long it'll take before future generations can look back on that era and just really not understand how it could be considered so normal at the time. We're too close to it these days, but someday, maybe, it'll be one of those weird historical oddities folks just won't be able to truly understand the same way we do.
