My only comment on the Olympics is about Simone Biles - WOW [View all]
In Olympics past, the media anointed a "darling" gymnast in the summer games and "darling" skater in the winter games. And for the most part they were REALLY good athletes. Really, seriously good. Just off the top of my head: Mary Lou Retton, Cathy Rigby, Dorothy Hammell, my own secret crush, Peggy Fleming, and so many others. There have also been less than stellar athletes who were the darling du jour based pretty much on media manufactured "cuteness".
But none come even close to Simone Biles. Her personal story is inspiring. She is, in fact, cute. She radiates a guileless warmth that is infectious. But none of that is my point. It is all background.
She is S E R I O U S L Y good! She is good beyond what any gymnast I can recall is good. She redefines good. A total package. Just by way of example, the ending of her floor routine is amazing. So amazing, it may have seemed impossible until she came along. Two back flips followed by a half twist and ending in a blind landing that she STICKS time after time. She is so good her performances are repeatable. Dependable.
I can only imagine where she might go from here.
I wish her a great Olympics, a better life, and a wise manager who cares about her as she starts to reap the rewards of millions in endorsements.
