Pushing others down helps them think they are above water level, above others, not drowning.

If they have money, they are not drowning, they must be superior.
If they don't have money, they are just happy to think they are above the persons around them.

Like drowning persons flailing in water pushing on anything that might give a second of rise, all they end up doing is raising the water level around themselves, never getting ahead. But, that doesn't matter since they have no direction they know to go anyways.
