MINNEAPOLIS - The windows are still papered over, but Thursday the wraps come off when a new Lunds grocery store opens at the corner of 12th and Hennepin in downtown Minneapolis.

The new 20,000-square-foot Lunds will be a full-service grocery store staffed by members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 653.

About 55 members of UFCW Local 653 will be working at the new store, reported Steve Milner, Local 653 business representative. He said about 40 of the staff are new hires while the rest are transfers from other Lunds stores.

Except for a few managers, everyone working at the new store will be a UFCW member. “Cashier, stock, deli — those are all our members,” Milner said.
