Anti-US protest held in Peshawar [View all]
Pakistani demonstrators gathered together to protest against the increasing US assassination drone attacks in their countrys northwest and the possible resumption of supplies to US-led forces stationed in neighboring Afghanistan.
The protest was organized by a council of dozens of political and religious parties of the country who strongly oppose the US intervention in their country and Islamabads cooperation with Washington in the so-called war against terror.
Down with America and Stop drone attacks chanted the protestors who called their rulers as friends of the America. The US has significantly increased its assassination drone strikes in Pakistan since a NATO summit in Chicago ended last month without a deal on ending Pakistans six-month blockade of its supply routes for US-led forces in Afghanistan.
The strategic supply routes were closed after a US air strike killed several Pakistani soldiers in November last year. In March, Pakistans Parliament agreed to reopen the supply lines on the condition that Washington apologizes for the November air strikes and end the assassination drone attacks on its soil which Islamabad termed as unlawful and a violation of the countrys sovereignty. However, US authorities said US will continue its attacks in Pakistans northwestern tribal belt despite Islamabads repeated protests over the attacks. And in the past three weeks, there have been nine such attacks in Pakistans northwest that have killed many people.
The protestors are saying that it is high time that Pakistan permanently closes its supply lines for US-led troops in Afghanistan and immediately withdraws from the US-led war that has taken a heavy toll on their country. The demonstrators reported that Pakistan would not have been faced with such a political and economic instability and worsening security situation, had it not supported the US in its so-called war against terror.
