The court’s four conservatives — Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. — would have granted most of North Carolina’s request (to demand to see a state-issued ID).

But they were unable to find a necessary fifth vote from one of the court’s four liberals.

North Carolina's voter ID law got shot down by Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. The governor of North Carolina took it to the Supreme Court.

Since the Supreme Court now has four sane people and four bigots, the four to four vote means that the lower court ruling stands. The North Carolina voter ID law is dead. (And in practical terms, this means a hell of a lot of black people cannot be denied their votes.)

The next president of the United States will appoint a ninth judge. And perhaps even more. This is one of the top issues in the upcoming election.
