(58,785 posts)or about any private property these individuals might own. They're objecting to the pipeline crossing other peoples' land. Their ancestors were nomads who moved around what they consider "ancestral" areas from year to year., and that is the basis for the claim that the pipeline crosses "sacred" lands. Some of the protesters are from the nearby Standing Rock Reservation, and other ND reservations, but a bunch come from farther away.
Personally, I'm wondering why they haven't pointed out specific ancestral sites that can and should be protected, through government purchase if necessary. This has been a matter of intense interest to preservationists for decades now, and many sites have been protected.
From a couple weeks ago,
"Riders from the Standing Rock, Rosebud, and Lower Brule Lakota reservations came together on horseback to push back a police line that had formed between a group of protesters and the entrance to the Dakota Access Pipeline construction site."
