Yes, Apple, Samsung, and others sell at a premium, but if people waited a little while they could buy the same phone at a significantly reduced price. It was because of those high prices why cell phone companies stopped subsidizing the phones, and introduced the buy on time at 0% interest.

It comes right back to the consumer. There is already a slowing down of smart phone repeat sales, where people are realizing that they do not need a new phone every year. The new changes aren't buying them that much.

The bulk of Apple's business comes from iphone sales. That is why they are looking for other sources of revenue, such as music, or television. The advantage they have is they have billions of dollars of cushion so they have time.

I will wait to see what the Iphone 8 has to offer
