I think specialization can begin much earlier than junior high, or could if the learning environment was very different from what we have now. Most of the reading writing and math which is really necessary is learned by grade 3, and kids begin to gravitate toward specific areas of learning.
Although it's good to expose kids to many subjects & options, the specific inborn gifts & interests of a child will lead, if given the chance, to the most fulfilling & useful learning.
My favorite memories of elementary school were the times I had classroom chores, or learned other practical life things... otherwise, my little brain was academically overloaded. And even though academics were easy for me, and I excelled, they haven't helped me a whole lot in grownup life.
