(5,400 posts)of life in the public sector (if you will; in other words, not immediately involving my family and me) are of the Watergate years and of watching the hearings. I remember distinctly my father (still an Eisenhower Republican at almost 88) being openly disdainful of Nixon at the dinner table, something he, as a reserved civil engineer, never did. Even at age 7-8, I was suspicious of Nixon, asking my parents why he was sweating so much on TV; I knew there was something amiss with him.
I am now well into middle age, and as I have learned more about Nixon, and human nature, I know how devastating insecurity can be, both for those who feel it, and for those who surround them in any capacity. Bring that onto the national and international stage, and you have the makings of a profound disaster.
Think what would NOT have happened had young Adolph Hitler been accepted into the Viennese Academy of Arts, fulfilling his dream of becoming an artist. An oversimplification, to be sure, but history has hinged on smaller things than this.
