(37,648 posts)the foundation, as foundation plantings (aka shubbery). Lawns cannot be over 12 inches in height. You can have a garden in your back yard, though. I used to have a blackberry bush garden, which was several feet high....with a clear boundary as a garden, neat, but still with a regular lawn elsewhere.
I can put tall plantings in the front yard, if clearly marked off...like a tall shrub or something, even if set off away from the foundation.
It's a matter of common sense. The law is to prevent lowering of home values in a neighborhood, people who don't maintain their lawns, the encouragement of varmints, things like that.
If you look at a front lawn and it looks like an abandoned yard, you'll have trouble with the laws, even if you tell them you can't eat those plants. If it's attractive, has a border, etc., etc., it'll pass.
