That's his identity.

Those he killed weren't "his people." Step 1.

If they weren't his people, they were in the same group of people killing his people.

Communalism. Once it takes root, it's really hard to root out and this is where it fairly often leads.

I'm not me. I'm just a member of my group. It's the kind of thinking that makes nation-state chauvinism seem mild.
