(105,956 posts)The rest of his life is a footnote. The important thing here has been the Republicans giving their nomination to an obvious conman and bigot, and most of them acquiescing to it. If he loses (which is still not guaranteed), the question still remains "what may the Republicans do next time?" Can they nominate a bigot who isn't quite so self-destructive, and succeed against President Clinton in 2020? Will their moral bankruptcy be apparent, and the party fall apart? Or will they return to Business As Usual?
The world doesn't revolve around Trump. But it does more or less revolve around political power in the USA. The Republican party has influence not only over public policy at federal, state and city level, but also over many people's attitudes to religion, immigrants and more. If they stick with open bigotry, that'll be the story of this year and decade, not what Trump does next.
