Donald Trump.
If the GOP establishment thinks this nightmare is going to be over as soon as Hillary trounces Trump on election night they might want to think again. Trump is already a hero to a large majority of registered Republicans. In a poll taken after P*ssygate, 12% of Republicans said he should drop out -- the rest were just fine with his behavior.
For Trump, last night was really about nothing more than giving the deplorables their fantasy debate, the ultimate Hillary smackdown -- giving them the pleasure of watching a big burly man throwing everything they've been passing around in emails for the last 20 years at her, live on national television. Going after Bill, calling her the devil, saying he would have her thrown in jail... Lies! Emails!!! Benghaaaaaziiiii!!!!!! -- it was the sweetest red meat the Internet-dwelling alt-right could ever ask for.
Never mind the fact that he looked like an angry troll and she came across once again as the only obvious presidential choice for sane people. Last night's debate will have little to no effect on the outcome of the election, but Trump further built upon his already rock-solid support among a large majority of the GOP base, and they are not going to walk away from him after this is all over. If anything, they will blame establishment Republicans in Washington for hamstringing him. Why, he could have won if those traitorous swine hadn't all abandoned him with 30 days to go!
And so for all the delightful daydreams that the GOP leadership is having about leaving this sordid disaster of an election behind and going back to the good old days of trickle-down tax cuts and dogwhistle social politics with Pence 2020 or some other tedious Mr. Average, they'd better get ready for Trump vs. Clinton II -- The ReTrumpening.
If you were Donald Trump, why would you not do this? Imagine the ratings!
