17. Bernie has always caucused with the Democrats and they have reciprocated

He's currently the Ranking Member of the Budget Committee. If the Dems (i.e. Dems plus Bernie plus Angus King) take the majority, he'll probably become Budget Committee Chair, although it's not certain. Someone with more seniority might bump him. For example, Ron Wyden is on the committee and has more seniority, but he's currently Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, and will probably (though not necessarily) take the Finance chairship.

The Senate calculations that I've seen all assume that King and Sanders will continue to caucus with the Democrats. It's not at all impossible that the Democrats (excluding those Independents who come in for so much abuse in this thread) will have only 48 or 49 seats. It will be King and Sanders that give the Democrats the majority.

Apparently you want the Democratic Party to say, "Thanks for helping us get control of the Senate by caucusing with us. Now buzz off. We're going to depart from longstanding tradition and not accord you any of the benefits of caucusing with us." That will be a strong incentive for independents to decide not to caucus with the Democrats ever again.
