The suburbs and more rural areas of the country tend to be more conservative than the big cities. And that's something that has been true for a long time.

Different philosophies based on where people live. If you are out in the country, your life moves a bit slower and quieter. You don't have as much crime as the cities. Gun violence isn't as big of a problem. The local area may be able to focus more on schools. So your mindset just starts to become more conservative. You feel like you don't really need the government for much.

The gun issue is the biggest divide geographically. Someone out in the country who owns some guns may have never seen a gun crime. They may not know a single person who was shot. To them, there is absolutely no gun problem at all. So they ask, "Why does the government want my guns?"
But in the city, gangs are going around doing drive-bys. People are being shot by accident. Crime is high. etc.. to these people, guns are a huge problem.

But this is why you have a debate. Not everyone in America lives the same way. Not everyone has grown up with the same experiences. And this is why we have to be careful what kind of laws you pass on the federal level. Because what works wonderfully in the northeast of the country, could hurt people in the south...or vice-versa. This is a big country with a lot of different types of people in it.
