I grew up an Indians fan in Ashtabula, Ohio (where Trump is campaigning today. Sigh.) i have major arguments with my family and high school classmates over Cleveland's continued use of their racist mascot. Even the team name needs to be changed, IMO.

I don't understand why sports fans cling to racist images like Chief Wahoo, or team names like The Redskins. What would be so bad about retiring the name and renaming the team after an animal or some other benign entity? The fact is that back in the old days, many sports teams changed their names when they relocated or they were taken over by new management. Today, any change is seen as stealing someone's birthright.

The continued use of these racist symbols is a stark example of a majority telling minorities etc what they are allowed to find offensive. What makes it worse is the reality that people who have lived a life of privilege - as have white people - tend to find equality to be oppressive, when and if equality gains a foothold. Ergo, pointing out that a longstanding team symbol embodies racism is seen as oppressing the rights of those who are not being oppressed by the symbol.
