(209 posts)It all comes down to Separation of Church and State. The government should not be funding religion period. Many immigrants came to the United States to flee persecution from a dominant religion. The fact that we valued the Freedom of Religion and from it is key.
It seems like lately we are being pushed toward a dominant Christian Conservative perspective above all else and that seems to be chipping away from the Separation of Church and State. I agree with your right to be anti religion. However, in the history of Civil Rights, religion played a key role. One example would be the Quaker meeting houses two hundred years ago who invited speakers like Frederick Douglas, Lucretia Mott, Susan B Anthony etc to their meetings. This spurred on their involvement in the Underground Railroad movement, the Woman's Right's movement and unfortunately the WTC. Fast forward to Rev. Martin Luther King and the churches that promoted Civil Rights that became a movement.
I think if religions supporting Civil Rights banded together no matter the religion or non religion they could be a powerful force for change once again. I may be naive, but it might be a way to effect positive change. It's all about coming together and not being divided.
