Trump is not trolling. He has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. There is no strategy in his behavior beyond the very simple need for attention. At any given moment, he will say whatever will get him attention with no concern for the consequences. The consequences are irrelevant, truth is irrelevant. All that matters is that he is the center of attention (good or bad, doesn't matter).

For someone with NPD, the past (immediate or long term) is not important. The future (immediate or long term) is also not important. They live in the moment.

Trump is utterly predictable if you realize that he doesn't have some master plan. If someone else is getting attention (like Pence or Christie), then Trump will erupt to get the limelight back on himself. He is completely uninterested in "ingratiating himself" with anyone. A narcissist barely recognizes that other people exist. He simply wants their attention, right now.
