Lysistrata was written at a time when the Greek democracy was in decline. The play itself is the culmination of an antiwar movement because the nation was suffering from a depletion of not only men due to war but also an absence of men in the populace.

Theater started with Greeks festivals where plays were written and produced as a contest to see who could write the best plays. Because of the destruction of the Library of Alexandria we lost most Greek plays. By the time Aristophanes and Euripides wrote Greece was in steep decline. The optimism of an earlier time was replaced by pessimism and cynicism. Continuous unending wars were a major factor.

The US is entering a similar period right now. Trump and a hawkish foreign policy could exacerbate the situation. Trump wants to increase the military. And we know if you have toys you want to use them.

As an example Afghanistan will fall to the Taliban is we do not insert more troops. The Afghan army is failing to maintain security.
