How Trump, GOP Will Maul Medicare [View all]

From Forbes online:
This blog is about financial deceptions, swindles and costly untruths.

Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

In his campaign for president, Donald Trump pledged to protect Medicare and Social Security. But in recent proposed cabinet appointments, he appears to have fast-tracked the privatization of both.

The bottom line is that retirement will be a much more costly enterprise if privatization goes through.

Should Trump backtrack on his promise, it will be an epic bait and switch. Both programs are extremely popular, relatively efficient and needed by more than 60 million Americans. Had Trump said during his campaign that he favored privatization, he wouldn't have received enough votes to win the electoral college. He still trails badly in the popular vote.

Yet the evidence is mounting that the GOP plans to green light Medicare privatization, sought by Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House. When he nominated Rep. Tom Price to be head of the Department of Health and Services, Trump signaled a willingness to carve up the medical program.

Medicare privatization will bamboozle American retirees because there's absolutely no evidence that the scheme will lower costs or improve care. It's all based on an untried and unproven theory that "free market" economics will magically lower costs for everyone and change the health care system overnight.
