One good course of action for bystanders in a case like this might have been to quietly step over to the man being verbally assaulted and ask if they could please walk and talk with him for a ways.
There are more decent people than there are haters, and the haters need to be visually reminded of that, They need to know they are outnumbered. One by one, they can pick us off, but if we stand together, literally and figuratively, they can be kept at bay.
