(28,661 posts)58. We have 2 sons, now 24 and 26.
I was older when we started our family - 38 with the first, and 41 with the second. I had prenatal genetic testing to see if everything had turned out OK. I also wanted to know gender. Not just out of curiosity. I had always envisioned myself as the mother of a daughter, and I knew myself well enough to know that if I were not having one, I would need time to adjust to that.
Sure enough, 2 boys, whom, of course, I would not trade for anything. That said, I had to grieve the loss of my fantasy daughter, and there is still a wistfulness for experiences I will never get to have not being her mother.
With the current raging misogyny that is blazing thru our country and culture, for the first time, I am glad she was not born.
