(15,418 posts)- and cultures include offshoots - sects - which have their own practices and beliefs that are sometimes only comparable by the name the sectarians choose to label themselves with. It's also why you often have incompatible laws or moral structures within the same culture.
The above is why some of the most horrendous acts people do to each other are against their "own". A single leader can embody the culture at that time, or can embody a sect, claiming to represent that culture.
Looking at "culture" from a broad overview - including a historical overview, the fact is that on their faces Eastern and Western cultures are overall compatible. Both cultures include both a democratic and a hierarchal factor.
A feudal or tribal ruler is just as responsible for the wellbeing of those under him or her as an elected official in a democratic society is. Religions provide both "hope" and "guilt" no matter what side of the Black or Caspian Sea they are practiced in.
There is little in the overall writings and tenets that are different.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is universal.
Look at the Abrahamic religions - they are all the same. Levitican Law is the same a Sharia Law. The only difference between the Torah and the Bible and Koran is the addition of tribal stories and laws as time went on.
It's the sects and personalities that cause all the trouble, that create the differences. So long as we bunch up into little tribes based on groups of any number of arbitrary constructs (tribe/family, religion, education, race, language, resources), looking some "Other" as being responsible for problems of our own group's making, there will be conflicts and incompatibility.
On edit - looking at the post above; individuals will always do what they feel they need to do, and many of the most strident "culture warriors" find some way to justify why it's okay for them to act different than their particular cultural/belief systems, but not for anyone else that belong to what they've claimed is "their culture".
I know of virulent tribalists who have married members of a minority or someone else who is diametrically opposed to them in a cultural sense, because "that one is different". They still haven't changed their willingly dumb-F*** ignorant tribal hatred when dealing with anyone else not in their culture, but with the wife/husband, they're all respectful and lovey-dovey.
